In addition to the national scheme for listing important buildings, Merton Council maintains a “Local List” of buildings that contribute to the local scene but which are not important enough to achieve a national listing.

At the Council Meeting last month the following properties/structures in our area were added to the Local List.

Bertram Cottages – 3 street lamp standards
16 Copse Hill (Christ Church Vicarage)
Hartfield Crescent – street lighting control cabinet at junction with Beulah Road (photo above)
20 Malcolm Road
89 Ridgway (Swan Inn)
93 Ridgway (former Ridgway Stables)

Immediately outside our area, the Manor Club & Institute at 76 Kingston Road was also locally listed.

However, the sewer pipe on Southside, which was originally intended to be locally listed, has had its listing deferred for “further consultation”.

The Wimbledon Society had urged the Council to add 20 Malcolm Road to the Local List some years ago in order to protect its original interiors. Since then the property has been boarded up (photo above) and the state of the interior is not known.
