The Argos building at the corner of Wimbledon Hill Road and Alexandra Road may be one of the newer buildings in the town centre but, architecturally, it can best be described as underwhelming.
A proposal has been filed to demolish the building and replace it with a new block that would be partly 4 storeys high and partly 6 storeys. It would have shops at ground level & flats above.
We welcome some of the design elements, including having curved corners that would be more prominent that the existing flattened curve. But we feel that adding a canopy or colonnade would be of benefit to the large number of pedestrians who traverse that corner in all weathers.
However, we are disappointed that no provision for affordable housing has been made when the draft Local Plan envisages a provision of 50%.
