Following an earlier exchange with Merton Council, we have written to them again to urge them to stop using glyphosate as a weedkiller throughout the Borough.
Glyphosate is a herbicide that was developed in the 1970s and has been used worldwide. However, in the last ten years a number of studies have led to concerns about the side effects on the environment and also on humans. For instance, in March 2015 the World Health Organisation classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic in humans”.
Several councils, including some London Boroughs, have now stopped using glyphosate and use other forms of weedkiller. We believe that Merton should follow their lead. You can read our latest letter here.
