Earlier this month, Wimbledon Society members completed a survey of empty retail premises in different shopping centres in the Wimbledon area. This covered shops temporarily closed because of Covid but also other units that were empty for different reasons. A link to our findings is here.
In Wimbledon Park, Leopold Road, the village High St and in Ridgway we found at least 90% of shops were open. In the Broadway, Wimbledon Hill Road, Raynes Park and Haydons Road between 80% and 90% were open, whilst in Merton Road, Merton High St and Kingston Road around one third of units were empty. Full details of the results of the survey are available for download here: High St Survey.
Centre Court Shopping Centre had only 63% of businesses open. This may be a consequence of the closure of the Centre’s anchor store – Debenhams – though that occurred before the Covid outbreak.
