International Women’s Day, the 8th of March 2024 made a fitting background to the placing of a commemorative plaque on Dorset Hall, a Grade II Listed Georgian house, on the Kingston Road in Merton Park. This was the former home of Rose Lamartine Yates, suffragette, social reformer and the first woman elected to the governing board of the Cyclists’ Touring Club. A surprise visitor to the opening was Yolande Yates, granddaughter of Rose and keen supporter of the project. She thanked the Dorset Hall group, and Barbara Gorna for taking on the task of saving the house from dereliction. Barbara said “it was a tough call, especially during lockdown, but we made it working with Clarion and Merton to move things forward.” Mr Sexton, a local developer has made a bid for the site and attended the opening. He promised to respect the heritage of the original building, and in particular, its fine rococo ceiling.
