After years of being under threat of closure, the South West London Borough Commander has announced that a single operational site for the Boroughs of Wandsworth and Merton is to be created at Wimbledon Police Station. A number of officers from the Response Team at Earlsfield will move to Wimbledon shortly.
There are currently two separate sites for the two Boroughs that are less than two miles apart and it is recognised that this is not the most effective use of resources or the most efficient way to provide local services. The Wimbledon Society has consistently argued for the retention of the Police Station in the town centre.
The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) and the Metropolitan Police are still conducting their Estates Review to take account of the recruitment of thousands of extra police officers. Whilst this news does not confirm that Wimbledon Police Station is definitely safe from the threat of closure, it does seem to make it less likely.
