How should the new 20mph speed limits be operated to ensure everyone complies?

The Council has introduced a general 20mph speed limit across the Borough. This is for the safety of all – motorists, cyclists and pedestrians – and we support it. But our observations are that not all motorists have noticed the changes. So, what should the Council now do to ensure greater compliance?

We have written to the Council’s Director of Environment & Regeneration suggesting specific traffic calming measures are introduced in Ridgway and Worple Road: you can see our letter here.

The Council has now replied to advise that they have no enforcement powers themselves and that they will not have the means to implement our suggested improvements for the foreseeable future.

Co-incidentally, the Department for Transport has been running a consultation into Roads Policing and you can read our submission here. Our letter in response to this consultation is here.
