Members of the Wimbledon Society took advantage of the autumn sunshine in early September, and enjoyed a private guided tour of the area behind King’s Cross station.
Over the last few years this area has changed dramatically – from an industrial, almost no-go area after dark to being an open and welcoming area. It’s now home to Google, Central St Martin’s as well as numerous bars, cafes and shops.
Our tour started with a talk at the Visitor Centre where our knowledgeable guide Linda Redmond gave us an overview of the development. She pointed out the new buildings, and told us how some sections of the original buildings such as the gas holders have been moved and turned into luxury flats.
She then led the group around the site while pointing out the award-winning new buildings, and then into some of the original railway sheds and warehouses, which are now displaying a new lease of life.
The Granary Building [see above] was built to store grain from Lincolnshire destined for London’s bakeries, but is now home to Central St Martin’s part of the University of the Arts London.
While the area is highly developed, there are still gardens for tenants, workers and visitors to enjoy this area of King’s Cross.
A number of Wimbledon Society members commented that they plan to return to explore this area of King’s Cross more in the near future.
