Many London Boroughs have been implementing “School Streets”, which allow a safe space for children to walk and cycle by restricting vehicles from the vicinity of schools at drop off and pick up times.  They also prevent vehicles from idling near schools, thereby improving the air quality.

Until now Merton has had only three school streets but the Council has announced that a further 25 will be created this year.  Many of these are in Wimbledon, including outside Bishop Gilpin & Ricards Lodge Schools in Lake Road; the Ursuline High School in Crescent Road & Southdown Drive; and Garfield Primary School in South Wimbledon.

The council’s information on school streets is here.
