Artist in residence, Jo Holdsworth

Jo Holdsworth, artist in residence

In April 2023, we welcomed our first ever artist in residence Jo Holdsworth. Jo is an award winning contemporary British painter based in Wimbledon and known for her striking paintings of reflected and elongated figures. She takes inspiration from London’s ever-changing landscape and urban city views, as well as the coastal reflections in Cornwall at low tide. Her work has been on album and magazine covers and her dynamic and unique paintings are collected throughout the world. Jo created a new series of large paintings at the Museum and visitors to the Museum dropped in to the adjacent Norman Plastow Gallery to watch her work and find out more about her practice.

As part of her residency Jo created a series of sketchbook drawings responding to the Museum’s collection and the historic building in which the Museum is located. Jo kindly donated her sketchbook of Museum drawings to the Museum at the end of her residency. It is currently on display in our special exhibition ‘Behind that Door – unlocking the history of 22 Ridgway‘.

Excerpts from Jo’s sketchbook can be viewed below.
