A new concert hall is planned for the centre of Wimbledon. This is an exciting development, promoted by Anthony Wilkinson, Director of the Wimbledon Music Festival. The project has excellent sponsorship, with Darcey Bussell and Vladimir Ashkenazy as patrons and support throughout the music world. It is intended to finance the project with no use of public funds.

The site under consideration is the Hartfield Road car park.

The Wimbledon Society strongly supports the project.

The architect is world renowned Frank Gehry, whose designs have transformed the life of many towns and cities: just think of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown LA, the Louis Vutton Foundation in Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Looking forward to a time when we can once again come together and enjoy ourselves, plans include a world class amenity ideal for music of all kinds, opera, stage and drama including a main hall, a smaller performance space and other facilities and roof gardens.

The facility will be a huge boost to the artistic life of the town supporting education, local music such as the Wimbledon Choral Society and other arts. It will also provide opportunity to expand artistic and, of course, leisure businesses in the town, providing a much needed boost to our town centre.

We have written to the council expressing our support for the scheme and asking them to reinstate the cultural designation of the site, changed in the latest version of the local plan. Our letter is here.

More details of the development are planned for our forthcoming newsletter.
