AFC Wimbledon have applied for permission to allow rugby to be played at their new stadium in Plough Lane.
When permission was given for the construction of the football ground some years ago, a condition was imposed that the ground would only be used for football matches. The club now wish to remove this condition.
The stadium has poor public transport links compared with other areas of Wimbledon. The intention was to monitor the effects of home matches on local residents, but this has been delayed because of Covid restrictions and has not yet been done. So no-one really knows what potential disruption there might be from football matches.
Accordingly, the Wimbledon Society thinks that it is too early to decide whether to host rugby matches as well and would prefer a delay until the originally planned surveys have been completed. You can read our letter to the Council here.
