In November, members of the Wimbledon Society had a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Surrey History Centre in Woking, which holds and makes accessible over six miles of historical records going back over nine centuries relating to the County of Surrey. It is also a centre for archaeological research into Surrey’s historic sites.
Our tour started with a history of the building and then it was straight into the work of the archives. The importance of cling film and a very cold freezer was explained as well as how and when a hazmat suit and goggles are used by the archivists to destroy infestations and damp in documents! We had a fascinating insight in to the work of the archives conservator who showed us her very intricate and delicate work – often mending holes in paper one thread at a time. The tour ended with members being able to look and handle original documents about Wimbledon in the archives.
